Kevil “Kids with Cancer”
Kentucky Elks Association’s State Major Project
I hope everyone is doing ok from the virus. It has been very frustrating due to lodge closures and the activities our lodges do in the spring put on hold or canceled.
With that being said, our State Major Project, “Kids with Cancer,” continues to be alive and well. From February 2019 to February 2020, we were able to support our “Kids with Cancer” project with approximately $70,000 and $49,000 due to the generosity of Jim Bob Kevil!! Although this year has started out slow, our “Kids with Cancer” has donated $10,000 to kids and their families for lodging, gas, food, medication and other individual needs.
So far, we have helped 17 kids and families. This money came from Lodge donations at the February convention. We should be receiving the Kevil grant for the second year anytime. I encourage every KY Lodge to utilize our “Kids with Cancer Kevil Fund” to assist families facing the challenges that come with taking care of a child sick with cancer. It is our duty to promote our great organization to our communities, clinics and hospitals and make them aware of our State Major Project as a resource for families in crisis. The toughest application we received thus far was for a 1-year old child with cancer. The difficulty that this family confronted is unimaginable and it is so rewarding to witness how much our help eased some of the burden that these families experience. That is just one application! This is “Elks Care-Elks Share” in action.
Finally, I want to thank Diana Yates for the effort and hard work she has put in through the years. She developed a firm foundation for KEA Major Project. Likewise, I want to sincerely thank the members of the current Kevil Committee for their dedication to making sure the charitable fund is truly used to meet the needs of “Kids with Cancer.” If anyone at any lodge has questions, you can contact me, Dava Hooper (West) or Beth Saunders (East).
Fraternally,
Charlie Martin, PSP
